Converted Wool Mill

31 May

Take a look at this beautifully designed, converted wool mill in Helsinki featured in the June edition of Bravacasa. Used as both home and office, the owner has preserved the wool mill’s industrial roots with custom furniture pieces from reclaimed and industrial style materials.

This home accommodates and embraces childhood, promoting a very healthy balance between work play and a playful design focus. ┬áRefreshing images…

Transformation of a bayside home: The Before Shots

22 May

Over the next couple of months I’ll be blogging the live transformation of a recent acquisition of mine in Sydney. I warn you in advance… it ain’t no oil painting!…. but a structural and aesthetic challenge on a shoestring budget.

Faking it in Style

20 Apr

It continues to amaze me how clever imitation fabrics and wall coverings are becoming. From cushions, to wallpaper, faking it no longer needs to look tacky.

Canary Yellow + Steel Grey Children’s Room

15 Apr

Gender Neutral doesn’t always mean you need to stick to beige and lemon. I recently styled a child’s room using a bold, industrial-style palette that was shared by a brother and sister duo. While I sourced some one off retro pieces, other products were available at Metro Mum.

Alternative name signs for your child’s room

Sick of the wooden letters? So am I. Here are some great DIY projects for something different for your child’s room.

Printer’s Type Wood Blocks

I love reusing materials. These blocks make very cool, industrial style artworks for your child’s room. A child’s room doesn’t have to be “babyish” at all – you can design a space to last…

I bought these blocks for my son for under $50!

Mosaic Signs

I love mosaic – not the pre-cut, ready to apply patterns that are now popular but the hand cut, artisan craft that’s been around for thousands of years.

A large mosaic letter for something different…

Saw this amazing olive tree displayed in an art exhibition in Ravenna.

Sextantio le Grotte della Civita

13 Apr

Nestled within a UNESCO heritage setting of Matera is the extraordinary design hotel┬áSextantio le Grotte della Civita. The cave-turn-design hotel provides a unique opportunity to experience austere luxuries in a majestic mountain setting, redefining ‘authenticity’ as we know it. ┬á

Daniele Kihlgren, the Swedish-Italian entrepreneur, hotelier and philanthropist, drove the resuscitation of the caves, furnished in a very raw, minimalist style that pays homage the lives previously spent in the sassi (stone) dwellings.

Guest rooms are adorned with antique linen, handmade antique furniture, candles and frangranced with local essence oils (my room smelled like fresh figs and lemon.. divine!). There is a common area in candlelit rock hewn church that will transport you to a very spiritual place.

Watch in awe…

I love all things industrial, repurposed and minimalist so today’s blog pays tribute to some show stoppers.
